Roy Davis Altman, MD

Dr. Altman is the Professor of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, in the Division of Rheumatology and Immunology. He completed his undergraduate training at Michigan State University. His postgraduate training was at University of Miami School of Medicine, where he has taught since 1969 in the departments of Rheumatology, Immunology,
and Orthopedics.

Dr. Altman was the principal investigator for the development and approval of Voltaren gel,
a $2 billion dollar per year diclofenac gel.

He was also the director of the Rheumatology Research Unit for five years. Dr. Altman served as Lieutenant with US Navy and as General Medical Officer. He is certified with the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American Board of Internal Medicine, and the Rheumatology Section of the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Presently, Dr. Altman serves on Therapeutic Guidelines for Osteoarthritis, International Cartilage Repair Society, the Paget’s Disease Foundation, and the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research. In 2007 he was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award in Osteoarthritis by the Osteoarthritis Research Society International and in 2008 he was given the Editorial Service Award-Internal Medicine News.

Dr. Altman is author of over 200 publications, 200+ abstracts and presentations, and 79 book chapters, among other publications.
